Marcia Gay Harden, born 14 August 1959 in San Diego, California, was the daughter of Beverly who was a homewife and Thad the US Navy officer. She is the mother to an older brother, as well as three sisters. Due to her father's work as diplomat, the family traveled around the globe including countries such as Germany, Japan and Greece. Harden attended Surrattsville High School in Clinton before settling in Maryland. She went on to the University of Texas at Austin in the fall of 1980, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in theater at the time.
